"Jimmy Knows" - New Sermon Series

After the exhilaration of Easter Sunday, we are back to "real life" and the age old question, “What Now?” In our new sermon series, "Jimmy Knows," we turn to the Book of James. James offers a practical guide to the living out of Christian faith. Its primary argument is that faith on its own has to be alive by expressing itself in good actions. James outlines for his readers various values they should express in their lives through actions. These values and actions give expression to one's faith. James reminds us that it is not enough to "talk the talk" of the Christian life; we must also "walk the walk" as a faithful response to the grace that saves us. Join us for this four-week sermon series, which will also be paired with four weeks of Bill & Kipp's Excellent Adventure Bible Study on the Book of James.

Have You Completed Your Funeral Planning Guide

Our VHUMC Funeral Planning Guides are designed to help you communicate to your loved ones the plans you would like considered at your death. It’s a tough subject for all of us, but what a beautiful, thoughtful, caring gift you can provide to those you love most during a time where they are grieving, confused, and overwhelmed with so many things. Click the link to download a copy or come by the Church Office for printed copies.

When you complete your Guide, we suggest you make a copy and bring it to the Church Office. We will retain that copy on file and scan it into our database, so that it is handy when needed. For more information, please contact any of our Clergy or call the Church Office at (205) 822-9631.

Bundles of Hope Diaper and Wipe Drive

VHUMC will host our annual diaper and wipe drive for Bundles of Hope in honor or memory of all mothers. Bundles of Hope seeks to provide an adequate and reliable supply of diapers to families experiencing financial hardship while engaging the community and raising awareness of diaper needs. This year’s drive will be from Sunday, April 25 through Sunday, May 16. Please bring all donations to the bins at the main church office or outside Tyson Hall. This is our fourth year to host this drive, so let’s make it our best one yet.

5-Minute Missions Are Coming Back in April

We are so excited to be bringing 5-minute missions back to VHUMC! Our first mission is planned for Sunday, April 18, from 9:00-9:45 am in the Fellowship Hall. We have recently partnered with Vineyard Family Services - a non-profit group out of Pelham that works to feed and supply kids in need on school breaks through their Backpack Buddies program. They also help in other programs to promote responsible fatherhood, help children and families in crisis situations, help homeless/transitional housing children, and single parent home children.

We will be packing hygiene bags for these children in a socially distanced, assembly line, fashion. We look forward to partnering with this group and doing as much as we can to help them!

You can also get the race app, Rise & Stride, from the App Store or Google Play.

Elementary Sunday School in April

During April our 1st-5th graders will be learning to follow Christ's example of caring for others and making peace. When Adam and Eve decided that their way was better than God’s way and broke God’s rule, they changed the relationship between God and His creation putting man at odds with God. God could have done anything He wanted to punish mankind – even putting an end to what He created. But instead, God decided to make peace with us. Ultimately God did this through His Son, Jesus. When Jesus rose from the dead, He paid the price for everything that was wrong and unfair in this world. Because of Jesus, we can have peace.

April Memory Verse

Our 1st - 5th graders have the opportunity to learn a different Bible verse each month. Children can either recite their verse in the elementary office before or after Sunday School, or send a video of themselves reciting the verse to Jamie Meeks (jmeeks@vhumc.org). Kids who recite their verse in the elementary office will get a sweet treat, and everyone who recites the verse will have a chance to win a grand prize at the end of the school year!

April's memory verse is: “So let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build up one another.” ~Romans 14:19

1st - 5th Grade Bible Study

Our 1st-5th grade Bible Study, Bible Pathfinders, is meeting in person and we are having so much fun! We meet Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:00 in room 212 on the elementary floor. Bible Pathfinders is a great place for our 1st-5th graders to grow closer to God. We study the Bible, play games, participate in activities, crafts, have discussion and more! We would love your child to join us!

Due to COVID restrictions, registration is required weekly, and we have a limited number of spots available. Masks are required, and drop off is no earlier than 6:00 and pick up is no later than 7:00.

Vacation Bible Camp

We are SO excited to invite our 4K (by September 1, 2020) through 5th graders to join us for an in-person Vacation Bible Camp - Discovery on Adventure Island! VBC will be June 14-18 from 9:00-12:00 each day. Children will be explorers who will explore the way God’s great light shines in the world, and learn how they can reflect that light in their own lives.

Due to COVID-19 safety measures, we have limited spots available. Once our registration is full we will not be able to accept any additional children. Walk-up registration will not be available. All children and volunteers will be required to wear masks.

Student Helpers Needed for Vacation Bible Camp

We invite students 6th - 12th grades to volunteer during the week of Vacation Bible Camp - Discovery on Adventure Island! It takes many people to make this exciting week happen, and our students are a HUGE part of that. VBC will be June 14-18 from 9:00 - 12:00 each day. If your student is interested in volunteering, please take a moment to register now.

Adult Volunteers for Vacation Bible Camp

We are so excited to be able to offer an in-person Covid safe Vacation Bible Camp this year!! We feel confident that we have a good plan in place to have a safe and FUN week for the children. None of these plans will happen without our wonderful adult volunteers! Please consider volunteering to serve our children during VBC: June 14-18 from 9:00 - 12:00 each day. We have needs for 1st-5th grade group leaders, craft helpers, snack helpers, and more. Please take a moment to register to volunteer or email Jamie Meeks at jmeeks@vhumc.org with any questions. Thank you!

Building Maintenance Job Opening

We are looking for someone to fill a part-time position (approximately eight hours a week which could be spread over multiple days) to handle general maintenance jobs around the facility. It does not include plumbing, electrical, or HVAC. Examples of jobs would be cabinet door repair, touchup painting, installing columbarium plaques, or mounting a television. You would need to be able to carry a ladder and pick up at least 30 lbs. If you are interested, please pick up an application in the church office.

What About the Memorial Service

As we are educating everyone about our Columbarium, we also get questions about having a memorial service here at the church. Services can vary from a small family gathering in the Columbarium, to a larger service in the Chapel, to a very large service in the Sanctuary. For church members and their families, the only costs are for musicians and an A/V technician if needed. A pastor honorarium is optional. We do suggest you complete one of our Funeral Planning Guides and return it to us so that your wishes for your memorial service can be known and honored. If you would like to know more about our Columbarium, please contact Gary Wyatt (769-0108 / gwyatt@vhumc.org) or Melinda Burnett (769-0115 / mburnett@vhumc.org).

Ongoing Outreach

Food Pantry

The Food Pantry needs spaghetti sauce, jelly, peanut butter, and egg cartons. We can always use plastic grocery bags and cloth bags. We are serving over 200 families every other week thru our drive-thru so it takes almost 3,000 bags every month. There is a bin by the church office or inside the lighthouse for these items. Thank you.

Longtime Partnership with First Light

Many things were canceled due to the pandemic in 2020, but one group that continued to serve was our First Light team. They were still able to provide lunch and dinners as needed to the women and children at First Light. The delivery was a little different and the numbers were not the norm, but the food and hospitality from our faithful team continued. A special thanks to Helen Dennis, our longtime volunteer who continued to coordinate our groups to serve these women during a pandemic every month.

Now, it is your turn to help First Light. This year’s First Light Gala event will be held on Thursday, April 29, at 6:30 pm. The event will be virtual, but you can join in and help support First Light and all that they do. Auction bidding will begin on April 19 through April 29. To register for this event, click the link below.
